A Nation of ‘Incarcoholics’
After twenty-five years at the heart of Her Majesty’s Prison Service, both as governor and inspector, John Podmore says we are obsessed with incarceration and ‘have become a nation of incarcoholics’
Launching his book, ‘Out of Sight Out of Mind’ subtitled ‘Why Britain’s Prisons are Failing’, John Podmore explained his reasons for this view on BBC Breakfast , at the influential Royal Society of Arts and on the Andrew Marr radio programme. On Breakfast, he looked for answers and compared community prisons to the John Lewis business plan, ‘What’s wrong with a John Lewis prison that’s owned and run by the community? We have public sector prisons, we have private prisons, why don’t we have community prisons run by the community?’
At the RSA, in debate with Nick Herbert, the Minister of State for Policing and Criminal Justice, he began by noting the people we don’t lock up - or very few of them: the bankers, phone hackers and corrupt policemen. Next he took on the issue of security, stating that it is the relationship between staff and prisoners that keeps prisoners safe and secure. ‘Cooperation not coercion.... read full article
