Wuthering Heights
By Emily BrontePrice: - - ISBN: -
Availability: -Steve Howard reports from High Down on Emily Bronte’s Image courtesy of Matthew Meadows Wuthering Heights: Wuthering Heights was the first and only novel by Emily Brontë, published when she was 29. She died the following year. ... The big questions were raised: is Heathcliffe
the embodiment of evil; and if so, is this due to
his nature or a result of his upbringing? The
group agreed Heathcliff was a 'Machiavellian
being', as Miles put it, but the jury was still out by the end on the whether nature or nurture
was to blame. ... The discussion of Wuthering Heights continued
into the following fortnight’s meeting, and
only partly due to the lockdown in the first
one. The novel might not be for everyone, as
the style is certainly difficult at first and the
structure of the book is complicated – an
edition with a family tree at the front is useful!
But stick with it and you may find it stimulates
as much debate and enjoyment as it did for
the High Down group.
Confronting Demons
By Harry ShawPrice: - - ISBN: -
Availability: -Book review by Billy Little - HMP Bullingdon. The pace and detail Harry Shaw applies
to describing his environment, characters and
how they were feeling sweeps you up and
takes you on the graft with him. The introduction
to this book gives you the impression that
it will be full of dramatic, chaotic, dangerous
and exciting events, but that’s just how ‘arry
with an ‘H’ wanted it to be. It’s more a case
of through the storm the sunshine came, but
what a journey to get there. ... This is a must read for anyone who wants
something better from their life. It’s not a step
by step manual on how to live, feel and
comport yourself into a better life, it’s much
more than that. It’s a man’s life being given
back to him. This fast, profound in places,
violent, distressing, funny read will keep you
up late at night. You won’t want to put it
down. Well done Harry, give us more!
Lucky Luciano Mafia Murderer and Secret Agent
By Tim NewarkPrice: £11.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: MainstreamReview by Billy Little - HMP Bullingdon. Tim Newark wastes no time in tearing apart the man, the myth and legend of Lucky Luciano. In illustrating Luciano’s rise to notoriety in the criminal underworld to how he was manipulated like a puppet into believing his own self-proclaimed status as a criminal mastermind.
Jailhouse Lawyers
By Mumia Abu-JamalPrice: 0 - ISBN: 0
Availability: All good bookshopsReview by Charles Hanson. “Jailhouse Lawyers” details how prisoners seldom received competent, effective or even adequate representation from lawyers in their criminal trials. Alternatively, they have to seek aid from inmates with self-acquired legal skills and in the process rely on these “jailhouse lawyers” or indeed themselves to boldly challenge the U.S. “legal system” in spite of their incarceration and in spite of retaliation from prison officials for their efforts.
GEF BAD CHI
By Neil SpeedPrice: £12.35 - ISBN: 0
Availability: XlibrisReview by Keith A Mallinson - Education Dept, HMP Wormwood Scrubs. Neil Speed is a former prisoner who came up with the concept of GEF BAD CHI whilst in prison. Puzzle addicts will find that they are onto a real winner. Neil has graded the
puzzles from Easy to Hard and also provided an answer key.
Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother
By Amy ChuaPrice: £9.49 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Bloomsbury Publishing PLCReview by RJS Hattersley from HMP Wakefield. This book caused a bit of a stir in this country when it was released earlier this year, provoking many debates on parenting and the dumbingdown of education standards, but that was nothing compared to the fuss it made in America! Any parent worried about their children growing up in the ‘modern world’ should read this book.
Banks on Sentence 6th Edition
By Robert BanksPrice: £51 - ISBN: 0
Availability: All good bookshopsReview by Stanley Best. The now 6th Edition of this book has been eagerly awaited, not least by the Judges whose lot it is to pass sentence after a jury has returned a verdict of guilty. Defending and prosecuting Counsel, in their different spheres of activity and concern, will also find much to engage their attention since getting it right is now often a major reoccupation and any error is likely to end up in a visit to the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division).
Inside Faith; Praying for People in Prison
By William NoblettPrice: £14.95 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Darton, Longman & Todd Ltd.Review by Keith Pound, former Chaplain General of the Prison Service. This particular book serves its purposes admirably. The Chaplain General’s
book will serve as an inspiration and motivator
to many. May it be widely used and become an instrument of prayer for many. ‘Pray for those in prison as if you were in prison with them’. William Noblett’s book makes it easier for us to do that.
True Grit
By Charles PortisPrice: £0 - ISBN: 0
Availability: All good bookshopsReview by Sarah Turvey - HMP Bullingdon. The story is narrated by Mattie Ross, a young girl determined to hunt down her father’s killer. She enlists the help of the ageing, hard-drinking Reuben ‘Rooster’ Cogburn, described as the ‘meanest’ US marshall in Arkansas, ‘a pitiless
man’. At the heart of the novel is the developing relationship between this unlikely pair and their
growing admiration for each other’s ‘true grit’.
The Lost Boyz - A dark side of graffiti
By Justin RollinsPrice: £16.50 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Waterside PressReview by Billy Little, HMP Bullingdon. This book is a ‘must-read’ for half the prison population, academics and politicians. It delivers a concise insight into a life that almost never was. In Justin’s own words ‘From a lost boy to a found man’. From the urban youth mentality to maturity; a truly remarkable story.
Beauty
By Raphael SelbournePrice: £7.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Tindal Street Press Ltd,Winner of the 2009 Costa First Novel Award. Beauty
is a twenty-year-old Bangladeshi, living in the midlands. She has managed to resist an arranged marriage with a much older man, and is under pressure for disgracing her family. They subject her to physical and mental abuse. So she runs away, and we follow her through the streets of Wolverhampton as she heads towards some potentially explosive culture clashes.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
By Stieg LarssonPrice: £7.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: all good bookshopsReview by JD - A prisoner in Japan. This is part one of the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson. This novel is a great read. It’s got everything: fascinating multi-layered plot, deep characters, it’s intelligent and exciting for me, an added bonus is the setting. How refreshing to be in Sweden instead of the US or Britain.
Blood Road
By Caspar WalshPrice: £7.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Headline Review by John Flint - Guernsey State Prison. This book, I feel, is ideal for those wishing to progress their literacy, as the style and pace keeps the reader’s attention and is not focussed in one area for too long. Which all helps move the book along. The chapters are kept very short and all the text is 12pt/2pt leaded, making it very clear. The lack of any humour, however, leaves the book wanting.
Chequered Justice
By John BartlettPrice: £12.99 - ISBN: 978-1-84624-524-4
Availability: Book Guild PublishingReview by Lucy Forde - Inside Time. I would recommend this book for the plot line. If you read it in jail you will be the person saying, ‘been there, got treated like that’; if never having visited Her Majesty’s finest you will - I hope - be concerned about the corruption that is portrayed in Chequered Justice; be assured it really does go on!
Under and Alone - Infiltrating the World’s Most Violent Motorcycle Gang
By William QueenPrice: £7.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Mainstream Publishing.Review by Billy Little - HMP Bullingdon. When I see this sort of book I tend to think of it as being just another character dining out on the highlights of a professional working life; not to mention attempting to safely enhance any pension plan. That aside, Queen leaves little room for doubt as he takes you on a journey into the paradoxical world of the highly organised, but extremely violent and anarchic, ‘Outlaw Motorcycle Gang’ (OMG).
The Promise
By Eva Schloss, stepsister of Ann FrankPrice: £6.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Puffin"This is the story of my family, an account of the events that tore us from our home in Austria and filled the world with terror and suffering...I hope through this book you will be moved to share kindness and tolerance with others;

Availability: From all good bookshopsBook reviewed by RJS Hattersley - serving prisoner. This is an in depth study of music, covering mathematical theories and neurology, stopping off at African music through to Indonesian gamelan, Bach, Mozart, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. It asks why music is important to all cultures and what purpose does it serve?
Classic Ephemera
By Darren Henley & Tim LihoreauPrice: £9.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: From all good bookshopsBook reviewed by RJS Hattersley - serving prisoner. Classic Ephemera, is a humorous guide to classical music, covering a lot of ground for a relatively short book. It is ideal for the novice classical music fan and gives some great information on all the major composers, operas and ballets, plots, several quotes, and mini charts.
Knifer
By Ronnie ThompsonPrice: £12.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Headline ReviewBook review by ex-prisoner Justin Rollins. Ronnie Thompson one time prison officer, screw, guv. Now a very talented author, I believe has come a long way from his first book Screwed. Now using his experiences to write books like Knifer, well I say good luck to him, better then patrolling the landings with a baton and key. I think this book is a must read and believe it will go on to be a classic if not a best seller.
The Elephant Tree
By RD RonaldPrice: £8.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: MatadorBook review by John Flint - Guernsey State Prison. The novel is tidy. It’s a crime/love story that’s non-judgemental about the moral ethics of the topic. It has a neat ending and the potential for a spin-off. But, in all honesty, it has a totally prosaic plot-one for the faint-hearted. It’s the kind of last minute purchase you make before catching a flight to go on holiday. The book would be vastly improved by a bit of a sense of humour or irony, in order to break up and detract from the author’s fixation with minutiae.
48 Laws of Power
By Robert GreenePrice: £6.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Profile BooksBook review by RJS Hattersley - serving prisoner. The 48 Laws… is pretty much what it says on the cover, a Machiavellian guidebook for rising to the top, whether in politics, business, or anywhere else by manipulating, scheming and screwing over anyone who gets in your way, using people to your advantage whilst convincing everyone that you are actually a decent person.
Day of the Deal
By Jason WilsonPrice: £6.99 - ISBN: 978-0-9559170-2-8
Availability: Dealer ComicsReview by Matthew Williams - HMP Stocken. Day of the Deal follows a merry gang of amateurs running a cannabis farm in the suburbs. The book is a meticulous, professional piece of work, the characters and action are bold and consistent, the technical detail well researched. The story develops reasonably well, with characters largely engaging and interesting, though the book does have its flaws.
Holloway Prison: An Inside Story
By Hilary BeauchampPrice: £22.00 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Waterside PressReviewed by Matthew Meadows. This is a colourful and often melodramatic account by Hilary Beauchamp of her several decades spent as an art teacher in HMP Holloway, the largest women's prison in the UK. Hilary's own dark drawings of prison subjects are reproduced, reinforcing the sense that she too has been imprisoned in Holloway all these years. It's good to know she's out now. Read page 31 of November 2010 issue of Inside Time for an interview of Hilary with Eric McGraw.
The Poem Goes to Prison: Poems Chosen by Readers at HMP Barlinnie
By Edited by Kate Hendry, Scottish Poetry LibraryPrice: 0 - ISBN: 0
Availability: 0Reviewed by Noel Smith - Former Prisoner. The poems were chosen for the book by a group of prisoners who form a reading group at HMP Barlinnie, and, I must say, they seem like very good choices. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be on sale anywhere, though you can order a copy through any prison library. Get it, read it, laugh your socks off!
Squandered: How Gordon Brown is wasting over £1 Trillion of our money
By David CraigPrice: £9.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: ConstableReviewed by RJS Hattersley, Serving Prisoner. Whilst people predict the worst, following the Spending Review, it is quite welcome to read an account of Gordon Brown’s reign as Chancellor, especially as the book came out in 2008, prior to the financial crisis. The first part of this book sums up spending on public services and compares money spent on improvement in services. A similar theme seems to crop up overall – a massive rise in managers, managers’ pay, regulatory bodies, consultants, etc. A case of too many chiefs and not enough Indians. It is a reasonable and rational account of government spending that has become more relevant since it was written. And its lack of hindsight serves it well.
The Prison Cookbook
By Peter HigginbothamPrice: £12.99 - ISBN: 978-0-7524-5423-8
Availability: The History PressThis unique and generously illustrated volume explores the history of the English prison system - and more especially its food - from the Middle Ages through to the 21st century. Prison cuisine has a surprisingly varied history. As well as period recipes for long-forgotten dishes such as panada, burgoo and brewis, the book includes a complete facsimile reproduction of the official Manual of Cooking & Baking for the Use of Prison Officers published in 1902 at Parkhurst prison.
Chocolate Wishes
By Trisha AshleyPrice: £6.99 - ISBN: 978-1-84756-114-5
Availability: Avon (a division of Harper Collins)Review by Lucy Forde - Inside Time. Trisha Ashley's books will not tax your brain, test you intellectually or help you make life changing decisions; they will, however, lead you out of everyday stress into a world of country cottages and a life where problems are solved with chocolate and chats – basically pure escapism and, let’s face it, sometimes that’s all we ask of a book. Chocolate Wishes, like all the Trisha Ashley books that I have read, has a slightly downtrodden heroine, with best friends and a talent, in this case making chocolate and, in particular, chocolates with wishes inside – a chocolate fortune cookie.
The Killer Within: in the company of monsters
By Philip CarloPrice: £9.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: Mainstream PublishingReview by Billy Little - HMP Bullingdon. Having done some lengthy and in-depth interviews with some of the most notorious contract and serial killers, Carlos gives meaning to the term 'unbiased reporting and clarity of thought'. Whilst this book is not in the same league as his previous work, it does deliver the same punch. A good steady read without complications, a must for prison psychologists wishing to learn how to do it properly.
The Heat’s On
By Chester HimesPrice: ? - ISBN: 0
Availability: ?Reviewed by ex-prisoner Noel Smith. The Heat’s On is one of Chester Himes best novels and features his gruesome twosome, the Harlem police detectives Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed, a casually violent pair of coppers whom you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. ... If this is your first Chester Himes novel then, believe me, you are in for a treat.
Hard Time: A Brit in America’s Toughest Jail
By Shaun AttwoodPrice: £9.99 - ISBN: 0
Availability: all good bookshopsReview by Billy Little - HMP Bullingdon. After leaving England to pursue a career in America on the stock market, Shaun Attwood achieved his dream and made his first million, but the nightmare was about to begin. One minute Shaun was at home reading stock quotes on his computer
screen, the next his front door was off its hinges and he was in handcuffs and confusion. ... Shaun Attwood is no Ed Bunker (author of Mr Blue), but he does manage to capture and convey every emotion, smell and sound necessary for the reader to comprehend his plight and environment. It’s a place where you don’t want to be, surrounded by people that you don’t want to be with. A fast-paced look at life inside a prison that dismisses some stereotypes but reinforces others.
Banks on Sentence 5th Edition
By Robert BanksPrice: 0 - ISBN: 0
Availability: all good bookshopsBanks does not betray any opinion on sentencing. He gives you the facts and gives you them very ably. The 5th edition of his book, the latest, is a very useful addition to any prison library. Of course, you will have to get the next one too. Noises made by Kenneth Clarke, the new Justice Secretary, who is planning yet another Criminal Justice Bill, and the recently passed Coroners and Justice Act, means that the rate of change in sentencing isn’t going to be slowing down anytime soon.

brief introduction about Elizabeth Fry’s life covering childhood, religion and marriage but more importantly details of those initial Newgate prison visits. Soljas
By Graham JohnsonPrice: £9.99 - ISBN: 978-1-84596-602-7
Availability: Mainstream PublishingReview from ‘Macnutty’ - HMP Peterhead. Despite the violence, Soljas does raise the odd chuckle, while providing an insight into the gangland culture that exists in Britain today. Well researched and entertaining, despite the difficult subject matter, it is a worthy title to borrow from the library if available.
Scarred
By Sophie AndrewsPrice: £5.99 - ISBN: 978-0-340-93737-2
Availability: Hodder PriceInside Time’s Lucy Forde views a highly emotive subject with fresh eyes after reading the graphic and harrowing life story of a self harmer. Sophie has written her story in a factual and honest way; it is emotional – but given the subject how could it not be? Most importantly, particularly for Samaritans and Listeners, it explains self harming and is a subject that needs to be explained, not spoken of in hushed tones with knowing looks. Too many people jump to conclusions about self harming; now is not the time to condemn or condone Sophie’s or any other self harmer’s actions - rather than label them as ‘attention seekers’, reading Scarred will give an insight into the effect that self harming has on not just the self harmer but on other people in their lives.
Recollections of a Racketeer
By Patrick LanePrice: £7.99 - ISBN: 978-1-84596-578-5
Availability: all good bookshops and through AmazonReview from ‘MacNutty’ - HMP Peterhead. If this book becomes available through the library or club then get together and buy a copy to share. Perfect for that weekend lock-up and if you become interested, the paperback contains a list of other perspectives from the other parts of the gang and family members. The title that caught my eye was ‘Redemption of a Racketeer’, which leads on from the end of ‘Recollections of a Racketeer’. A knock out read, try it, you won’t be disappointed.
Operation Mincemeat
By Ben MacintyrePrice: £8.48 - ISBN: 978 -07475-98688
Availability: all good bookshopsGerard McGrath is of the opinion that a book should never be judged by its cover or title. It is self-evident that Ben has done diligent research in the writing of this book. In the manner of a gifted author he melds together: documents, letters, photographs, diaries and intelligence material recently released from the files of Naval Intelligence and MI5 to tell the compelling story of Operation Mincemeat. The photographs of various characters are an astute inclusion which enhanced my enjoyment. Ben has accomplished what any author worthy of the name should in drawing the reader into the story he is telling. At no point in the book did I experience boredom and the ensuing urge to put it down as lacking interest and feasibility. As aforementioned a page-turner of its genre; I recommend it and compliment Ben Macintyre.
Eat, Pray, Love … one woman’s search for everything
By Elizabeth GilbertPrice: 0 - ISBN: unknown
Availability: all good bookshopsThis book is a true account of the author’s search to find happiness. It contains three books outlining her journey through Italy, India and Indonesia, with thirty-six short tales in each. Elizabeth Gilbert describes this as ‘Japa Mala’, which is a string of beads, not unlike a Rosary, used for praying in India. The numbers are quite significant and she explains this at the beginning of the book. Elizabeth Gilbert begins her journey after a bitter divorce; a divorce from her husband that she didn’t embark on before praying for the very first time. The book is written with light hearted humour and the ups and downs of her life are quite comparable to many of our own; almost like a ‘gospel’ for women, with some great advice. Highly recommended ... particularly for women at any milestone in their life.
The Soloist … a lost dream, an unlikely friendship and the redemptive power of music
By Steve LopezPrice: £7.99 - ISBN: 978-0-552-77526-7
Availability: all good bookshopsReview from ‘MacNutty’ - HMP Peterhead. The Soloist is a wonderful story of hope; one that proves the difference between success and failure is having someone who cares and never gives up - no matter what. If you only read one book this year then I would certainly recommend that you make it this one.

existence. Whatever you feel about his wheeling
and dealing and lets face it, as readers of

cast an opinion you cannot help but admire
