Convicted prisoners book their own visits but visitors to remand prisoners can book their own visit.

Visitors to remand prisoners can book a visit by telephoning the Visit Booking Line, by Email at: SocialVisits.WormwoodScrubs@hmps.gsi.gov.uk or in person at the Visitors' Centre. When you Email you will get an automated response which includes a Visits Application Form.

There is a family-friendly Visitors' Centre run by Spurgeons, an independent charity. Visitors are offered a warm welcome, information and support. For more information call 020 8735 0595 or email wormwoodscrubs@spurgeons.org.

Facilities on offer at the Visitors' Centre

  • Information and advice about prison routines, visiting procedure, and the Prison Assisted Visits Scheme
  • A coffee bar selling a range of drinks and snacks
  • A children's play area with toys and games
  • A payphone
  • Toilets and baby changing facilities
  • A Family Support Group on the third Wednesday of every month (This group runs at the Visitors' Centre on the third Wednesday of every month between 5pm and 7pm. To find out more, ask a staff member at the centre or call 020 8740 1511.)

Only the following items are allowed into visits: ID, Visiting Order, up to £20 cash in coins for each group of visitors (for canteen purchases only), and clothes for remand prisoners. No bags of any kind are permitted in the visits room.

Up to four children under the age of 10 are allowed at each visit, with up to 3 visitors over the age of 10 but parents are asked to supervise their children at all times. There is a staffed crèche and play room available.

On entering HMP Wormwood Scrubs you are required to be searched. This will take the form of the removal of all outer wear (coats / jackets) and the removal of all belts and the empting of pockets so these items can be x-rayed. You will then be required to pass through a metal detecting portal (similar to an airport). Once through you will be given a level A rub down search (similar to an airport). Passive drugs dogs are also used.

Acceptable ID

All Adult visitors must provide either;
* one from list A and one from list B
* three from list B

In both cases, one piece of ID must include an address and one must include a date of birth.

Only original documents will be accepted. Photocopies, faxes, and items printed from the internet (e.g. bank statements) will not be accepted.

Names, addresses and dates of birth must match exactly across all ID provided, the information given when booking a visit, and any Visiting Orders.

Children may be required to produce one piece of ID that includes their date of birth, to confirm that they are under 18.

List A:

  • photo driving licence with correct address
  • valid passport (must be in-date)
  • identity card issued by an EU country

List B:

  • photo driving licence with correct address
  • valid passport (must be in-date)
  • identity card issued by a EU country
  • employer's photo ID card or student photo ID card
  • young person's proof of age card
  • vehicle registration certificate (DVLA V5C)
  • National Insurance card
  • valid old-style full UK driving licence with correct address (cannot be used with photo driving licence (list A, item 1)
  • valid disabled person’s Blue Badge parking permit

The following items must be original documents issued within 6 weeks of birth, marriage, adoption or naturalisation:

  • full original birth certificate (British nationals only)
  • UK marriage certificate
  • UK adoption certificate
  • UK certificate of naturalisation or registration

The following documents must be dated within the last three months:

  • utility (gas/electric/water) bill
  • telephone bill (landline only, not mobile phone)
  • council tax bill/statement
  • catalogue bill or store card bill/statement
  • bank or building society statement
  • addressed payslip
  • TV licence
  • credit card bill/statement
  • mortgage statement
  • valid insurance statement
  • NHS hospital appointment letter
  • official correspondence confirming entitlement to housing benefit, council tax benefit, tax credit or state pension
  • official correspondence from the Department for Work and Pensions, Jobcentre, HM Revenue and Customs or local authority
  • child benefit documentation or child tax credit documentation
  • valid NHS card
  • valid photo Freedom pass

Clothing and Property

Prisoners held on remand are permitted to wear their own clothes.
In order for you to hand in clothing for a remand prisoner you will need to have a visit booked on a weekday morning (Mon – Fri AM only). Clothing will not be accepted in the afternoons (PM visits) or on weekends and bank holidays. The amount of clothing you can hand in is as follows:

  • 6 T – shirts
  • 8 underwear
  • 8 pair of socks
  • 3 pairs of jeans
  • 2 Jogging bottoms
  • 1 pair of trainers
  • 2 Pair of trousers
  • 1 pair of shower slippers
  • 2 sweat tops (no hoods)
  • 3 jumpers

Remanded prisoners are also allowed 4 towels. These must be posted in.

Certain items of clothing are not allowed and the prison may refuse to accept any items deemed unsuitable for issue.

As a general rule don't take any plain white, black or navy blue tops, joggers or trousers

Suits, white shirts, black trousers etc, are not allowed in possession but maybe handed in and held in reception for a court appearance.
Before handing in the clothes you will be required to fill out a visits clothing record sheet this is available in the visitors centre.


Convicted prisoners are not permitted their own clothes but can have the following items posted in to them:

  • 7 pairs of socks
  • 7 underwear
  • 2 sets of pyjamas
  • 1 pair of shower slippers

All prisoners are allowed to have the following posted in:

  • 8 photos (no self-portraits)
  • A writing pad (not a spiral bound one)
  • A pack of envelopes
  • A book of stamps

Books are allowed but must be sent from a major bookstore or from Amazon on the internet. All items posted in to an inmate must be new and include the receipt.

Other items are allowed but it is advisable for the prisoner to get permission from his wings senior officer prior to you posting it in. All items not deemed suitable for issue will be placed in the inmate’s property and handed back on release.

Travel Information

Train: The nearest underground station is East Acton (Central Line), which is a ten minute walk away.

When you exit the station turn right and cross over the road. Turn left at the junction with Fitzneal Street and walk down to Du Cane Road. Turn left into Du Cane Road and the Visitors Centre is about 200 yards down on your left.

If you are early there is a small cafe to the left as you exit the station.
