The following is a letter to insidetime, from issue February 2012
Whatever happened to the good old-fashioned landing officers, the bloke at the end of every prison landing who sorted out your problems, be it a simple app for a VO or a chit for a clean pair of jeans? Back in the day, your landing officer was the main man; he knew who was who and what was what. He could provide you with cleaning materials to clean your cell (compulsory in those days) and he was the first port of call for everyone and could be relied on for information and help. He was respected by all, even if he could be a real bastard at times, and his word was his bond. He knew his job and knew how to run a smooth landing.
Nowadays I don’t have a clue who the bloke is sat at the end of my landing and I’ve given up asking him for anything. I certainly don’t rely on him and if I want a VO I have to fill an app in that then goes off to some obscure department which will deal with it if they get around to it and I put another 5 apps in. Give me a straight-talking landing officer with an app book who can give me a straight yes or no.
