The following is a letter to insidetime, from issue February 2012
I write in regards to the letter by Lee Wookie ‘Forget the junkies, feed me!’ in your December issue. Why do prisoners on methadone, or with drug problems, always get referred to as ‘junkies’? To me this is just another form of bullying. Whatever happened to giving another human a bit of respect, no matter what their faults are? A lot of so-called junkies have suffered mental health problems of their own and also abuse as children, which is probably why they use drugs. I don’t think that labelling them all as junkies is very helpful or supportive. Often I have found drug-users to be polite, friendly individuals regardless of the crimes they have committed. I am not a drug-user myself, but I just think it doesn’t hurt to be nice and that we shouldn’t label others.
