The following is a letter to insidetime, from issue May 2012
For some weeks now this prison has been introducing cut backs, one of which is stopping the issuing of tissues. As a result we are left with either toilet roll, which are already rationed or tearing up clothes or sheets in order to make handkerchiefs. I am one of the lucky ones having brought 3 handkerchiefs with me from my last prison. On the 26th of March I complained about this matter and the reply was – ‘You will not be able to have handkerchiefs sent in, please speak to your wing rep about discussing being allowed to buy handkerchiefs from catalogues at the next meeting, steps are being taken to put tissues on the facility list’.
What this basically means is that we have to buy tissues, and possibly handkerchiefs, from the canteen. There are quite a lot of prisoners who cannot afford to buy tissues or handkerchiefs from the canteen, through no fault of their own they have no money, may be sick, disabled, retired or unable to work. I can see that if something is not done soon then British prisons will be the worst in Europe. We seem to be going backwards!
