The following is a letter to insidetime, from issue September 2012
I am writing in utter disgust at the way Vulnerable Prisoners are treated. I’ve been in this jail since March this year on remand awaiting trial. I am gay and very ‘camp’, and due to my sexual orientation I have received abuse from other inmates. A couple of weeks ago this abuse turned to violent threats and for my own safety I was granted VP status. Prior to being granted VP status I worked as a mentor in IT, I visited the library daily and had the option of dozens of courses and jobs. Since becoming a VP I am now only allowed one morning session of maths or English a day, which not only increases my time spent in my cell but also results in me losing pay. I can no longer afford weekly essentials at canteen. I think that the way we are treated compared to ‘normal’ prisoners is completely unfair and unjustified. I hope that other gay prisoners do not experience what I am currently going through.

Every prison I have been to that I was a VP this is common. Education is bad enough anyway and VP'S get it even worse. Many people on VP have learning difficulties so need help more, but because of the staffs bigoted views and the systems they suffer. I see no PSI saying VP'S are treated any different, but that is not reality. Don't expect it to change, get used to it.26/9/2012 Michael Amherst - - www.michaelamherst.com
I'm doing some research on this issue and would be interested to know whether J Cook is still at HMP Preston. As to the first poster - I assume you mean 'Well you signed up for this!' That is total bull - no one signs up to be gay, if that is what you mean, and neither does being in prison make it reasonable for people to suffer or be discriminated against on grounds of sexuality. That is not the sentence.30/9/2012 Scotch Mist
I am becoming increasingly irritated by the comments made by Daniel Weener and those of his ilk. Get off this site and get onto Daily Mail online with the rest of the bigots. Thanks in advance.
